Sepia tone photo of Mars Uribe

Hi, my name is Mars Uribe. Sometimes, I go by the online handle of mxu (and on occasion mxuribe). I'm a technology professional, digital philosopher, enthusiast of silliness... I design, build, and manage digital products and platforms, and help people and organizations tap into emerging technologies. MarsUribe.net is my place on the web.

Elsewhere

This is where else I spend my time while online:

Now*

This is what else I'm doing nowadays:

  • Helping to organize, and speak (about self-hosting and digital sovereignty) at the upcoming Software Freedom Day New Jersey 2026
  • Helping my offspring prepare for get through university
  • Working at my dayjob, which is at a maker of science-based, nutritional products
  • Listening to numerous too many podcasts, mostly related to Linux and free/libre/open source software (...nothing wrong with the podcasts themselves, I simply have to take it easy a bit; pivot from consumer to maker again 😜)
  • Trying to lessen my time on social media...not to bring it to zero, but certainly lowering it

Ideas

Some thoughts swirling around in my brain:

  • Considering ever more easy approaches to self-hosting applications from my home machines via VPN services and/or a reverse proxy (where said proxy might live on virtual private server somewhere).
  • Why aren't more people using spark files, which are simple (text) files that store a person's wishes, dreams, and especially half-baked ideas?
  • Why aren't residential ISPs offering services that cater to self-hosters? Maybe not (yet) a big market, but if ISPs catered to this market, we'd have many more decentralized services running on the internet from homelabbers' computers. (Ok, email won't work so great due to pre-banned residential IP addresses, but still other stuff could work.)
